Ayah 1
حمٓ Ha Meem.
English - Ha, Meem. .
Ayah 2
تَنزِيلُ (The) revelation ٱلْكِتَٰبِ (of) the Book مِنَ (is) from ٱللَّهِ Allah ٱلْعَزِيزِ the All-Mighty, ٱلْحَكِيمِ the All-Wise.
English - The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. .
Ayah 3
إِنَّ Indeed, فِى in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth لَءَايَٰتٍ surely (are) Signs لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ for the believers.
English - Indeed, within the heavens and earth are signs for the believers. .
Ayah 4
وَفِى And in خَلْقِكُمْ your creation وَمَا and what يَبُثُّ He disperses مِن of دَآبَّةٍ (the) moving creatures ءَايَٰتٌ (are) Signs لِّقَوْمٍ for a people يُوقِنُونَ who are certain.
English - And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith]. .
Ayah 5
وَٱخْتِلَٰفِ And (in the) alternation ٱلَّيْلِ (of) the night وَٱلنَّهَارِ and the day وَمَآ and what أَنزَلَ Allah sends down ٱللَّهُ Allah sends down مِنَ from ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky مِن of رِّزْقٍ (the) provision فَأَحْيَا and gives life بِهِ thereby ٱلْأَرْضَ (to) the earth بَعْدَ after مَوْتِهَا its death, وَتَصْرِيفِ and (in) directing ٱلرِّيَٰحِ (the) winds ءَايَٰتٌ (are) Signs لِّقَوْمٍ for a people يَعْقِلُونَ who reason.
English - And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason. .
Ayah 6
تِلْكَ These ءَايَٰتُ (are the) Verses, ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah نَتْلُوهَا We recite them عَلَيْكَ to you بِٱلْحَقِّ in truth. فَبِأَىِّ Then in what حَدِيثٍۭ statement بَعْدَ after ٱللَّهِ Allah وَءَايَٰتِهِۦ and His Verses يُؤْمِنُونَ will they believe?
English - These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe? .
Ayah 7
وَيْلٌ Woe لِّكُلِّ to every أَفَّاكٍ liar أَثِيمٍ sinful
English - Woe to every sinful liar .
Ayah 8
يَسْمَعُ Who hears ءَايَٰتِ (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah تُتْلَىٰ recited عَلَيْهِ to him, ثُمَّ then يُصِرُّ persists مُسْتَكْبِرًا arrogantly كَأَن as if لَّمْ not يَسْمَعْهَا he heard them. فَبَشِّرْهُ So give him tidings بِعَذَابٍ (of) a punishment أَلِيمٍ painful.
English - Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment. .
Ayah 9
وَإِذَا And when عَلِمَ he knows مِنْ of ءَايَٰتِنَا Our Verses, شَيْـًٔا anything, ٱتَّخَذَهَا he takes them هُزُوًا (in) ridicule. أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ Those - لَهُمْ for them عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment مُّهِينٌ humiliating.
English - And when he knows anything of Our verses, he takes them in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment. .
Ayah 10
مِّن Before them وَرَآئِهِمْ Before them جَهَنَّمُ (is) Hell وَلَا and not يُغْنِى will avail عَنْهُم them مَّا what كَسَبُوا۟ they had earned شَيْـًٔا anything, وَلَا and not مَا what ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ they had taken مِن besides دُونِ besides ٱللَّهِ Allah أَوْلِيَآءَ (as) protectors. وَلَهُمْ And for them عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment عَظِيمٌ great.
English - Before them is Hell, and what they had earned will not avail them at all nor what they had taken besides Allah as allies. And they will have a great punishment. .
Ayah 11
هَٰذَا This هُدًى (is) guidance. وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve بِـَٔايَٰتِ in (the) Verses رَبِّهِمْ (of) their Lord, لَهُمْ for them عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment مِّن of رِّجْزٍ filth, أَلِيمٌ painful.
English - This [Qur’an] is guidance. And those who have disbelieved in the verses of their Lord will have a painful punishment of foul nature. .
Ayah 12
ٱللَّهُ Allah ٱلَّذِى (is) the One Who سَخَّرَ subjected لَكُمُ to you ٱلْبَحْرَ the sea لِتَجْرِىَ that may sail ٱلْفُلْكُ the ships فِيهِ therein بِأَمْرِهِۦ by His Command, وَلِتَبْتَغُوا۟ and that you may seek مِن of فَضْلِهِۦ His Bounty وَلَعَلَّكُمْ and that you may تَشْكُرُونَ give thanks.
English - It is Allah who subjected to you the sea so that ships may sail upon it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful. .
Ayah 13
وَسَخَّرَ And He has subjected لَكُم to you مَّا whatever فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَمَا and whatever فِى (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth - جَمِيعًا all مِّنْهُ from Him. إِنَّ Indeed, فِى in ذَٰلِكَ that لَءَايَٰتٍ surely are Signs لِّقَوْمٍ for a people يَتَفَكَّرُونَ who give thought.
English - And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth – all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. .
Ayah 14
قُل Say لِّلَّذِينَ to those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe يَغْفِرُوا۟ (to) forgive لِلَّذِينَ those who لَا (do) not يَرْجُونَ hope أَيَّامَ (for the) days ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah; لِيَجْزِىَ that He may recompense قَوْمًۢا a people بِمَا for what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَكْسِبُونَ earn.
English - Say, [O Muhammad], to those who have believed that they [should] forgive those who expect not the days of Allah so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn. .
Ayah 15
مَنْ Whoever عَمِلَ does صَٰلِحًا a righteous deed, فَلِنَفْسِهِۦ then it is for his soul, وَمَنْ and whoever أَسَآءَ does evil, فَعَلَيْهَا then it (is) against it. ثُمَّ Then إِلَىٰ to رَبِّكُمْ your Lord تُرْجَعُونَ you will be returned.
English - Whoever does a good deed – it is for himself; and whoever does evil – it is against the self. Then to your Lord you will be returned. .
Ayah 16
وَلَقَدْ And certainly, ءَاتَيْنَا We gave بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel ٱلْكِتَٰبَ the Book وَٱلْحُكْمَ and the wisdom وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ and the Prophethood, وَرَزَقْنَٰهُم and We provided them مِّنَ of ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ the good things وَفَضَّلْنَٰهُمْ and We preferred them عَلَى over ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ the worlds.
English - And We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgment and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds. .
Ayah 17
وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم And We gave them بَيِّنَٰتٍ clear proofs مِّنَ of ٱلْأَمْرِ the matter. فَمَا And not ٱخْتَلَفُوٓا۟ they differed إِلَّا except مِنۢ after بَعْدِ after مَا [what] جَآءَهُمُ came to them ٱلْعِلْمُ the knowledge, بَغْيًۢا (out of) envy بَيْنَهُمْ between themselves. إِنَّ Indeed, رَبَّكَ your Lord يَقْضِى will judge بَيْنَهُمْ between them يَوْمَ (on the) Day ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ (of) the Resurrection فِيمَا about what كَانُوا۟ they used to فِيهِ therein يَخْتَلِفُونَ differ.
English - And We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them – out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ. .
Ayah 18
ثُمَّ Then جَعَلْنَٰكَ We put you عَلَىٰ on شَرِيعَةٍ an ordained way مِّنَ of ٱلْأَمْرِ the matter; فَٱتَّبِعْهَا so follow it وَلَا and (do) not تَتَّبِعْ follow أَهْوَآءَ (the) desires ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who لَا (do) not يَعْلَمُونَ know.
English - Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know. .
Ayah 19
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they لَن never يُغْنُوا۟ will avail عَنكَ you مِنَ against ٱللَّهِ Allah شَيْـًٔا (in) anything. وَإِنَّ And indeed, ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ the wrongdoers بَعْضُهُمْ some of them أَوْلِيَآءُ (are) allies بَعْضٍ (of) others, وَٱللَّهُ and Allah وَلِىُّ (is the) Protector ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ (of) the righteous.
English - Indeed, they will never avail you against Allah at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another; but Allah is the protector of the righteous. .
Ayah 20
هَٰذَا This بَصَٰٓئِرُ (is) enlightenment لِلنَّاسِ for mankind وَهُدًى and guidance وَرَحْمَةٌ and mercy لِّقَوْمٍ for a people يُوقِنُونَ who are certain.
English - This [Qur’an] is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are certain [in faith]. .
Ayah 21
أَمْ Do حَسِبَ think ٱلَّذِينَ those who ٱجْتَرَحُوا۟ commit ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ evil deeds أَن that نَّجْعَلَهُمْ We will make them كَٱلَّذِينَ like those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَعَمِلُوا۟ and did ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ righteous deeds سَوَآءً equal مَّحْيَاهُمْ (in) their life وَمَمَاتُهُمْ and their death? سَآءَ Evil is مَا what يَحْكُمُونَ they judge!
English - Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds – [make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge. .
Ayah 22
وَخَلَقَ And Allah created ٱللَّهُ And Allah created ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth بِٱلْحَقِّ in truth وَلِتُجْزَىٰ and that may be recompensed كُلُّ every نَفْسٍۭ soul بِمَا for what كَسَبَتْ it has earned, وَهُمْ and they لَا will not be wronged. يُظْلَمُونَ will not be wronged.
English - And Allah created the heavens and earth in truth and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged. .
Ayah 23
أَفَرَءَيْتَ Have you seen مَنِ (he) who ٱتَّخَذَ takes إِلَٰهَهُۥ (as) his god هَوَىٰهُ his desire وَأَضَلَّهُ and Allah lets him go astray ٱللَّهُ and Allah lets him go astray عَلَىٰ knowingly, عِلْمٍ knowingly, وَخَتَمَ and He sets a seal عَلَىٰ upon سَمْعِهِۦ his hearing وَقَلْبِهِۦ and his heart وَجَعَلَ and puts عَلَىٰ over بَصَرِهِۦ his vision غِشَٰوَةً a veil? فَمَن Then who يَهْدِيهِ will guide him مِنۢ after بَعْدِ after ٱللَّهِ Allah? أَفَلَا Then will not تَذَكَّرُونَ you receive admonition?
English - Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded? .
Ayah 24
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say, مَا "Not هِىَ it إِلَّا (is) but حَيَاتُنَا our life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world, نَمُوتُ we die وَنَحْيَا and we live, وَمَا and not يُهْلِكُنَآ destroys us إِلَّا except ٱلدَّهْرُ the time." وَمَا And not لَهُم for them بِذَٰلِكَ of that مِنْ any عِلْمٍ knowledge; إِنْ not, هُمْ they إِلَّا (do) but يَظُنُّونَ guess.
English - And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming. .
Ayah 25
وَإِذَا And when تُتْلَىٰ are recited عَلَيْهِمْ to them ءَايَٰتُنَا Our Verses بَيِّنَٰتٍ clear, مَّا not كَانَ is حُجَّتَهُمْ their argument إِلَّآ except أَن that قَالُوا۟ they say, ٱئْتُوا۟ "Bring بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ our forefathers إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَٰدِقِينَ truthful."
English - And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, "Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful." .
Ayah 26
قُلِ Say, ٱللَّهُ "Allah يُحْيِيكُمْ gives you life, ثُمَّ then يُمِيتُكُمْ causes you to die; ثُمَّ then يَجْمَعُكُمْ He will gather you إِلَىٰ to يَوْمِ (the) Day ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ (of) the Resurrection, لَا no رَيْبَ doubt فِيهِ about it." وَلَٰكِنَّ But أَكْثَرَ most ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the people لَا (do) not يَعْلَمُونَ know.
English - Say, "Allah causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know." .
Ayah 27
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah مُلْكُ (is the) dominion ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth; وَيَوْمَ and (the) Day تَقُومُ is established ٱلسَّاعَةُ the Hour, يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day يَخْسَرُ will lose ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ the falsifiers.
English - And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And the Day the Hour appears – that Day the falsifiers will lose. .
Ayah 28
وَتَرَىٰ And you will see كُلَّ every أُمَّةٍ nation جَاثِيَةً kneeling. كُلُّ Every أُمَّةٍ nation تُدْعَىٰٓ will be called إِلَىٰ to كِتَٰبِهَا its record, ٱلْيَوْمَ "Today تُجْزَوْنَ you will be recompensed مَا (for) what كُنتُمْ you used to تَعْمَلُونَ do.
English - And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do. .
Ayah 29
هَٰذَا This, كِتَٰبُنَا Our Record, يَنطِقُ speaks عَلَيْكُم about you بِٱلْحَقِّ in truth. إِنَّا Indeed, We كُنَّا [We] used to نَسْتَنسِخُ transcribe مَا what كُنتُمْ you used to تَعْمَلُونَ do."
English - This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were having transcribed whatever you used to do." .
Ayah 30
فَأَمَّا Then as for ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَعَمِلُوا۟ and did ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ [the] righteous deeds, فَيُدْخِلُهُمْ will admit them رَبُّهُمْ their Lord فِى in(to) رَحْمَتِهِۦ His mercy. ذَٰلِكَ That هُوَ [it] ٱلْفَوْزُ (is) the success ٱلْمُبِينُ clear.
English - So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment. .
Ayah 31
وَأَمَّا But as for ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوٓا۟ disbelieved, أَفَلَمْ "Then were not تَكُنْ "Then were not ءَايَٰتِى My Verses تُتْلَىٰ recited عَلَيْكُمْ to you فَٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ but you were proud وَكُنتُمْ and you became قَوْمًا a people مُّجْرِمِينَ criminals?"
English - But as for those who disbelieved, [it will be said], "Were not Our verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and became a people of criminals? .
Ayah 32
وَإِذَا And when قِيلَ it was said, إِنَّ "Indeed وَعْدَ (the) Promise ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah حَقٌّ (is) true وَٱلسَّاعَةُ and the Hour - لَا (there is) no رَيْبَ doubt فِيهَا about it, قُلْتُم you said, مَّا "Not نَدْرِى we know مَا what ٱلسَّاعَةُ the Hour (is). إِن Not نَّظُنُّ we think إِلَّا except ظَنًّا an assumption, وَمَا and not نَحْنُ we بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ (are) convinced."
English - And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] – no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' " .
Ayah 33
وَبَدَا And (will) appear لَهُمْ to them سَيِّـَٔاتُ (the) evil مَا (of) what عَمِلُوا۟ they did وَحَاقَ and (will) envelop بِهِم them مَّا what كَانُوا۟ they used بِهِۦ [at it] يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ (to) mock.
English - And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule. .
Ayah 34
وَقِيلَ And it will be said, ٱلْيَوْمَ "Today نَنسَىٰكُمْ We forget you كَمَا as نَسِيتُمْ you forgot لِقَآءَ (the) meeting يَوْمِكُمْ (of) this Day of yours, هَٰذَا (of) this Day of yours, وَمَأْوَىٰكُمُ and your abode ٱلنَّارُ (is) the Fire, وَمَا and not لَكُم for you مِّن any نَّٰصِرِينَ helpers.
English - And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers. .
Ayah 35
ذَٰلِكُم That بِأَنَّكُمُ (is) because you ٱتَّخَذْتُمْ took ءَايَٰتِ (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah هُزُوًا (in) ridicule وَغَرَّتْكُمُ and deceived you ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ the life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world." فَٱلْيَوْمَ So this Day لَا not يُخْرَجُونَ they will be brought forth مِنْهَا from it وَلَا and not هُمْ they يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ will be asked to appease.
English - That is because you took the verses of Allah in ridicule, and worldly life deluded you." So that Day they will not be removed from it, nor will they be asked to appease [Allah]. .
Ayah 36
فَلِلَّهِ Then for Allah ٱلْحَمْدُ (is) all the praise, رَبِّ (the) Lord ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَرَبِّ and (the) Lord ٱلْأَرْضِ (of) the earth, رَبِّ (the) lord ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds.
English - Then, to Allah belongs [all] praise – Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds. .
Ayah 37
وَلَهُ And for Him ٱلْكِبْرِيَآءُ (is) the greatness فِى in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth, وَهُوَ and He ٱلْعَزِيزُ (is) the All-Mighty, ٱلْحَكِيمُ the All-Wise.
English - And to Him belongs [all] grandeur within the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. .
